How a box culvert works
The job of a box culvert is simple: move water under an obstruction without letting that water wash the road away. Water enters one end, flows through the barrel, and exits the other, while the road or rail embankment sits on top, carried by the culvert and the fill around it.
The structure has to do two things at once. It has to pass the design flow of water, sized so it does not back up and flood during a heavy storm, and it has to carry the load above, whether that is highway traffic, a rail line, or just the weight of the embankment. A precast box culvert is engineered and reinforced for both the water it passes and the load it carries, commonly to the AASHTO HS-20 highway loading standard where traffic runs over it.
Headwalls and wingwalls at each end hold back the embankment, guide the water in and out, and protect against erosion. They are what turn a buried box into a finished, stable crossing.
What are box culverts used for?
Box culverts show up anywhere water and a travel surface have to cross. The most common uses are:
- Road and highway drainage, carrying streams and ditches under the roadway.
- Stream crossings, letting a natural creek pass under a road or driveway.
- Stormwater and detention, moving or holding runoff in developed areas.

Types of box culverts
Box culverts divide a couple of ways. By how they are made, they are either precast, cast in a plant and delivered, or cast-in-place, poured on site in forms. By shape, they are four-sided, a fully enclosed box with its own floor, or three-sided, an open-bottom arch or box set on footings over the existing streambed.
